The Farm

Field Farms Ltd.

Located just outside the historical town of Petrolia in Southwestern Ontario, Field Farms Ltd. was founded in 1998 after the purchase of a 300-acre farm with an existing cash crop and livestock operation. Years of hard work resulted in the conversion in 2006 of the livestock operation to a 'Humane and Natural' designation, and all meat produced since is classified as such. Field Farms Ltd. also grows a combination of cash and subsistence crops.

The farm is a livelihood to 6 – 8 families and provides a steady source of work for a number of local contractors.

Livestock

Only naturally humane-raised and handled pork is produced by Field Farms Ltd. From farrow (birth) to humane slaughter, all piglets born on the farm are raised to full maturity. Being very social creatures, all piglets born within a week of each other stay together until finishing. The herd is carefully selected for their favourable genetics – health, fertility, meat quality and longevity.

The lush, rolling pastures around Bear Creek are grazed in summer by 30-35 mother cows, along with their calves and a bull. In fall the calves are weaned from their mothers and raised in a separate barn, allowing their mothers to comfortably recouperate for their next offspring.

Crops

Wheat, corn and soybeans are grown following a five-year rotation to best serve the earth and to maximize harvest. The crops are grown with minimum tillage and using natural fertilizer (solid and liquid manure). Soil health is of paramount importance and our compliance with the Nutrient Management Plan demands that the manure produced on our farm is done so with uncompromising environmental stewardship and for optimum nutrient utilization for crop production.
